Question:
Is it necessary to read Thana (Subhanaka Allahumma..) in salaah behind Imam?
Answer:
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
After the takbeer tahrimah it is sunnah to recite the thana (subhanaka Allahumma..), for the imam, muqtadi (one following the imam) or munfarid (one praying alone). If one joins salaah and finds the imam reciting qirat, then there is no need to read thana, one should concentrate and listen to the qirat.
Abu Saeed narrated: when the Prophet (ﷺ) started to pray he would say: “Subhanakallahumma, wa bihamdika tabarakasmuka wa ta’ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk (Glory and praise be to You, O Allah. Blessed be Your name and exalted be Your majesty, there is none worthy of worship except You.) (Nasai-899)

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ إِذَا افْتَتَحَ الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ۔ رواه النسائي
قال ابن نجيم في البحر الرائق: (قوله مستفتحا) هو حال من الوضع أي يضع قائلا: سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك، وقد تقدم أنه سنة لرواية الجماعة أنه كان – صلى الله عليه وسلم – يقوله إذا افتتح الصلاة، أطلقه فأفاد أنه يأتي به كل مصل إماما كان أو مأموما أو منفردا لكن قالوا المسبوق لا يأتي به إذا كان الإمام يجهر بالقراءة للاستماع، وصححه في الذخيرة۔
