Question:

Is it correct to say “Ya Nabi Salaam Alaika..?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The phrase “Ya Nabi Salam Alaika” means “O Prophet, peace be upon you.” In Arabic, the word “Ya” (يا) is used to address an individual or group present at the time. Therefore, if this phrase is used in front of the blessed grave of the Prophet ﷺ, then there is no impermissibility in doing so.

However, if this phrase is addressed from a place other than the blessed grave of the Prophet ﷺ with the belief that the Holy Prophet ﷺ is present and can see everything (which some groups falsely believe), then it is forbidden and considered as bid’ah (innovation) and shirk (polytheism).

Nevertheless, if one utters these types of phrases with the correct belief, meaning that it will be conveyed to the Prophet ﷺ by angels, then it is permissible. However, it is not recommended due to its resemblance to the beliefs of people with false creeds.
